In 1978, Rudolf Khachatryan’s first solo exhibition took place on Gogolevsky Boulevard in Moscow. Among the works was a portrait that the artist initially titled “Eastern Image.” The sitter was Levon Abrahamyan, a young ethnographer and close friend of Khachatryan who later became a scholar and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

According to Abrahamyan’s recollections, the portrait came about almost by chance: one day, they returned to the studio in the early hours of the morning, and Khachatryan put a turban on his friend and painted the work very quickly.

A curious incident occurred at the exhibition. An excited linguist, Melvar Melkonyan, who also often posed for Khachatryan, rushed up to Abrahamyan: “Come quickly, look what they wrote!” The visitors’ book contained the comment: “Why can the Eastern Image be found only at the exhibition?!” Melkonyan recalled a beautiful young woman who had stood in front of the portrait for a long time and suggested finding her—to tell her that she was not simply looking at a painting, but at a portrait of a living person. They never found her.

Over time, the portrait acquired another title—“Abu Lala Mahari,” after the hero of Avetik Isahakyan’s poem of the same title.
