The Art of Rudolph Khatchatrian

THE ART OF RUDOLPH KHACHATRIAN

The world stands still, quietly waiting for the Artist. Thus the desert dreams of rain, a traveller of an oasis, the mountains of temples on their slopes… It is just amazing to see and to know how God gives to everyone a gift of looking at the world, and to some a talent to draw it, and that is from the very early childhood. It is still not yet clear why though. The Divine Ordinance is initially concealed and will be revealed gradually to both the artist himself and those watching what he does and how he does it. In the same way one starts singing or dancing, speaking in verse or composing music. Yet it is not quite the same. The space of the sound and the body’s movements are created in the world itself, occupy a specific place (although temporarily) and, therefore, recall the perpetual movement and the mysterious tunes of nature. On the other hand, the artist’s doings are different in kind: he does not invade the world, but the world inhabits him, forcing him to represent it, seemingly, forever.

The great, important instant.

INVASION. REALITY 1

The incredible sharpness of vision first revealed itself in Rudolph Khachatrian’s drawings about half a century ago. We are looking at them now forgetting about the many years that passed by. So, what was the young man looking for in these little houses lost among the mountains, the silhouettes of sole trees, faces of old people? Least of all he was searching for any kind of lessons, if we understand the word in terms of training exercise. He was not exercising. He did not need to.

He drew…

Drew in order to draw.

“The desire to draw” – a great passion, which guides the man despite his will. Wherever it catches him, he takes up a pencil and starts creating, creating... It is worth to remember that poets absorbed deep in their thoughts often scribble sweet images of their dreams next to the lines of inspired verses. Likewise, a daughter of a potter from Syracuse, the legendary Dibudata, with a piece of coal captured the shadow of her loved-one who was leaving her forever. Both the poets and the craftsmen’s children were being driven by the same passion.

There are yet more examples.

We are not here to count them today. Let us just say that the passion for drawing caught Rudolph Khachatrian in his homeland, in Erevan. And it was this passion that immediately defined his entire destiny. The destiny of the artist, who took in the images of the world that was offering itself to his eyes in all its presence and power. The world decisively forced itself into his consciousness, demanding his most rapt attention, as it felt the need to be represented there and then by this particular still amateur artist. It was the world’s way of taming the future master. The world began to sit to him. Its face ingrained itself into the memory, turning into the forms of nature. They had to be fixed afresh and in every detail, with Dureresque precision and understanding of form. With a pen and a pencil…

And so it happened.

From now on every blade of grass by the house, every branch of a tree, every wrinkle on a face deserved attention. It seems that Khachatrian’s power of representation is ruthless, that every single detail is significant in itself and also in that unbreakable link that unites it with others. The sharp slate of the pencil and the pen with ink join a stroke to a stroke. This is how carpets are woven; this is how masters draw. But you should not think that the artist is indifferent to the subject of his representation. He is interested in the world’s being as such. He is the observer of Being, elect and important, important by being elect. The observer and admirer. From the early age this defined Khachatrian’s identity as an artist.

The stronger his understanding of his predestination was becoming, the more “stylishness” his art acquired. A certain similarity with drawings of seventeenth century masters was emerging as if by itself: as some mysterious ground of the future quest for artistic formulas. Perhaps, here, lies the secret law which often defines the paths of different masters and which still remains beyond the apprehension of the art historians.

In the beginning of his artistic career Vincent Van Gogh, drawing with coal or ink, exhibited a similar kind of expressive verism. At that time he had little idea of the pantheistic insight that came to him in his later years, when the cosmic storms transformed the usual skies by illuminating the Earth and people with a new, previously unseen Sun shining with the treble or even tenfold energy. In Van Gogh’s early drawings we also easily find the Dutch “underlining” of the masters of the Golden age of painting, which also became the Golden age of drawing. On the other hand, despite all differences in the results, Salvador Dali also followed a similar path: from a very delicate and precise drawing, through the temptations of fashionable “isms” to the reading of the Gospels.

Paintings of these masters appeal to the feelings of the viewer and demand his compassion. In the history of art (I mean, in the live history, and not in that written just for reading), there are laws, which rule the Universe of art, overcoming all obstacles and traditions, and lead to the creation of works unlike any other. Yet, one tradition cannot be surpassed or neglected. It is too important. This is the tradition of starting from the roots: from the natural longing for drawing to the search for a revelation. It is not accidental that drawing is regarded as the foundation of all the arts. It really is the foundation, and not just a professional but also a conceptual one. “To draw is to get to know” – this is the formula that we should always keep in mind. For those, who we are talking about here, drawing was a form of an introduction to the world. They learnt it all by themselves, in the process of “looking – understanding”. Now, in order to get to know Khachatrian’s art, the viewer must learn to “look and understand”.

From the very beginning, the artist wants to see in the surrounding reality not just objects of representation, but also “stories” related to them, which would explain their raison d’etre. The choice of the objects itself is telling. The artist wants to represent the faces of old women and shabby houses, a trunk of a tree without branches and an old shoe. All of these things have already lived for long and through a lot. They are doomed for extinction and are marked with a sign of “departure”. They have become “monuments” to themselves, the symbols of things, people and natural phenomena, which fall out of reality. The artistic device used by Khachatrian is based on his desire to capture the phantom image and to preserve its memory in the pencil lines on paper. Thus one of the draperies “sitting to him” is nailed to the wall, because the artist cannot be sure that it won’t sink into oblivion and disappear along with everything that surrounded him from early childhood (A Room Where The Artist Was Born, 1951). However, Rudolph never becomes a creator of genre scenes. He always and everywhere manages to find images-symbols. These seemingly unremarkable things are the documents of the inner consciousness of the self and the desire to represent them is driven by the enormous love for them. The eye-catching attention to detail, not just in the mode of interpretation of reality, but also in the very approach to it stems from both a deep affection for the world and an ability to look at it from outside. It is difficult to tell how Khachatrian manages to reach such an effect.

The little histories of objects, houses, trees and people make up an epos. The “parable quality” is felt in the artist’s treatment of particular subjects. Such an “obsession with history” does not come as a surprise in the land, where centuries cry for the skies through the mountains and temples.

It was this way of looking at the world that Khachatrian began to fight with. In his series of self-portraits of the late 1950s we can see him searching for reconciliation between his personal style of drawing and his idea of the self, which led to the new inner harmony of forms and images. Moreover, the “Rembrandtesque” passion (how else can we put it?!) for self-portraits unwillingly led the artist to the feeling of irreversibility of time…

In the 1960s he was destined to learn, that forms created by the artist have a right to certain independence, just by association reminding us of reality. Cubism and Surrealism assisted this understanding. Cubism made him to move shapes and mould them together. Surrealism, which itself had passed through the Cubist school, not dragging Khachatrian to the depths of the unconscious, taught him how to re-enforce the expressivity of his pictures by a peculiar combination of characteristic devices, particularly of “convex” and “hollow” elements. Surrealism pushed Khachatrian towards the creation of “figure compositions” - allegories, which emphasised the biological foundation of life. Just look at his “scream”, “love scenes” or the picture of a blind-man…

Very few masters willing to become part of the twentieth century “mainstream”, managed to escape from the impregnating temptation of these two “isms”… The two movements taught the freedom of dealing with forms and provided an opportunity to create the second, metaphorical existence parallel to the real world.

Ervand Kochar who supported young Khachatrian, gave him a chance to see French art periodicals, which he brought back with him from Paris when he returned to Armenia in 1936. The magazines and illustrations in them affirmed Khachatrian’s belief in the rightfulness of the search for the “open forms”.

Kochar became a friend and a mentor – a spiritual teacher of the young artist. Their conversations about peinture dans l’espase (painting in space) finally convinced Khachatrian in the possibility of playful (still “playful”) attitude towards the “life of forms”. Hence, the artist makes an attempt to free himself from the power of history. The Myth begins to rule. Strange mysteries dominate Khachatrian’s drawings, etchings and monotypes of that time (drawing is still the foundation). The line prevails. It pulsates, trying to break loose from the constraints of the sheet of paper, turning from an ornamental arabesque into a resilient clot of energy.

It was time to suppress it.

That was an hour of trial. A trial of the self. A test of one’s skill.

PARALLELISM. FORMULA NO. 1

Stylistically cool analytical 1970s…

The storm of Pop Art’s madness had died out and the re-examination of the past “isms” was over.

This is exactly how we remember the art of that decade.

Once again Rudolph Khachatrian absorbs himself in searching for, this time, a stylistic absolute, a certain formula (then, it was not clear that it was meant to be “No.1”, as the others though already sensed, were yet to follow). His mature style was emerging out of the medium of drawing itself, which had already been somewhat tamed and disciplined. The passion is already familiar to us, thanks to the on-going recognition - apprehension of yet another possible re-incarnation of the culture of drawing. I’d like to emphasise it – the “culture of drawing”. This is how they care for a grapevine in order to have ripe grapes by the autumn, and only then, having observed all rules, make wine, keeping it to mature and then to be savoured.

A table and a wine glass.

Paper and a sharp slate of pencil.

A little later – cardboard and sepia.

Representation is reduced to a formula. The youthful moods are magically merged with the temptations of modernism. And that is not all. Here history and myth have found a compromise in legends: in the images of David, Judith and Laura. The historical entourage is imitated with a degree of plausibility that can satisfy the viewer only in theatre. The artist hints rather than teaches a lesson of archeological accuracy. Wearing turbans, berets, cloaks, robes, shawls or garlands, the characters of Khachatrian’s pencil portraits form a long chain that stretches before us. The fancy-dressed models feel confident. It seems that the world belongs to them and the spectator occupies just a place of a vassal in the king’s suite.

Here, form is deliberately and explicitly manifested, but just enough as to convince us in its own triumph. The triumph is indeed vivid and impressive. The form has a powerful effect in coming forth before the spectator (this is the way an actor performs on the stage) and also in the underlined “stylishness”. The appeal to the past is necessary in order to give the status of the firm and solid to the fragile. The very balancing on the edge of the almost bodiless (as the technique of pencil drawing in the manner of the old Italian masters makes form appear lifeless) and the bodily (as the element of the cult of Power and Eros is present here from the very beginning) suggests the search for a universal formula – formula no. 1. The formula reconciles the opposites without cancelling their original characters or essences, which are represented implicitly or demonstrated deliberately. Indeed, here Eros is hidden, disguised and the demonstration of power is deliberately exaggerated. The viewer needs to be prepared to appreciate Shakespearean theatre, where everything is grand and spectacular, yet full of drama, the meaning of which is still to be revealed. The facial expressions are meaningful. Here everyone has his or her own secret, which is not going to be confessed.

And even so.

This world is fragile and beautiful. The frame, delimiting and, therefore, guarding the drawing is often inscribed into the image itself (but even when it is absent visually, the frame is still present semantically). The stage-like arrangement of figures in space mentioned above appears here once again. We can only speculate about the character of this space. It is wall-less, sterile and pure. It has no dimensions. The source of light illuminating the faces and figures remains a mystery. The model comes into the space as into a Camera Obscura, where he or she is looked at, studied and drawn…The artist is always present among his models: a series of self-portraits is a proof to that. Only one sheet is lacking in the sequence: an image of an artist drawing his model. Perhaps, this most traditional image of the world of art has been omitted deliberately. Just as a key to the pantry lock is deliberately thrown into the pond.

In the 1970s we find nude studies among Khachatrian’s works. Their independence and self-sufficiency is quite evident. A certain theatricality of posing the model common to all works of the decade is still present in the portraits. Yet now the model looks so cautious and alienated that the viewer feels concerned for her future

The same applies to still lives. Flowers in jars and glasses are placed in an indefinite space. A copper mortar is balancing on the invisible windowsill. A table with a book “drives into” a narrow window and an angel announces the event. No doubt, the artist is drawing an enchanted world: it is here, right beside us, and yet is already deprived of everything human, alive or real. It is a metaphysical world, whose grandness and mysteriousness could be grasped only by Giorgio de Chirico or artists of German “magical realism”.

Khachatrian’s still-lives are “eventful”. Here is a little girl with plaits. Not accidentally she enters the world of objects and finds herself in the magic circle of an alien kind of gravitation and different sensations of material substances (Still Life with Plaits, 1972). It becomes clear that the world of objects represented by the artist should not be entered and is, perhaps, even dangerous to look at.

And once again - a game. A dangerous game.

We are being allured. They want to frighten us.

We are being allured by beauty and frightened by its inaccessibility.

Formula no. 1 was followed by another formula, which extended and specified it. Everything became more rigid and uncompromising, or, we can say, more “formula-based”. And it is not just because Khachatrian began to use the glimmering from under strokes and stains levkas as a ground for his sepia and red chalk drawings. The master himself had changed: once again, building a new system on the foundation of the past years, he was aiming at the absolute. He synthesised his 1950s experience of elemental drawing with the search for the style and “stylishness” of the 1970s, for the time being leaving aside the artistic experiments of the intermediate decade. We are yet to see them springing from the firm shells of the newly discovered formulas: guises and images at once. Here, everything is perfect, secluded and calm. The tragedy is locked up inside, but it is still tangible and makes us uneasy by its presence…

The Master’s spirit is alert.

And so are we.

PARALLELISM. FORMULA No. 2.

Only a retrospective gives a viewer an opportunity to understand the entire career of an artist. The earlier or later works, divided between museums and private collections are preserved in their entirety only in the artist’s memory. The exhibition gives us an opportunity to behold each of the artist’s individual works, as well as to see them in an ensemble presented in the exposition.

The surface of levkas, which Khachatrian now uses as the ground for his drawings, is as firm as stone. The system of representation, which the artist has built and endured, needs just this kind of foundation. It gives the status of eternity to the fragility of monochrome images. The artist’s reality, which is parallel to the real world, is weightlessly hovering between him and Eternity. The master is determined to make his images unforgettable, so that leaving the exhibition the viewer does not leave the memories behind. Khachatrian engraves his pictures on the surface of our memory, “stamps” them into our consciousness, striving to make “his” “ours”. Here is where the “formula quality” of his new style comes from: his severe laconism and precise representation of details. An alchemist of style - Khachatrian manages to grasp the mystery of possible harmony between artistic conventions and naturalism not simply by mixing them, but bringing one quality into another. Precious metals and magical potions are made like this. And so is Art in its original purity: Art moved by passion and inner discipline…

An astounding impression…

Despite the completeness and self-sufficiency of form achieved by the thorough finishing of every detail (although there are no details in the conventional sense of the word, as the whole is detailed and then moulded together again), the viewer effortlessly understands the original idea of the master. This important factor allows him or her to enter the world created by the artist on the brilliant levkas surface and appreciate the quality of execution demonstrated here. A similar effect is achieved in the work of a goldsmith or a stonemason. The artistic value of their production is increased as we realise how difficult it was to make the object presented for our contemplation.

Besides.

We are all strangers in this world; all strangers.

Here is The Pilgrim (1981). He is naked but noble. He’s lied down under the dried tree in the desert. In his philosophically calm face we see peace and austerity. Everything around us is vain and only with our eyes closed we can remember what is dear to us. Khachatrian is convinced that representation is never equal to reality: it is just a “re-production” of the world, but not its visual echo. The models look straight at the viewer: some of them make deliberate gestures, trying to turn the “monologue” into the “dialogue”; others are willing to speak.

Passion for travelling in dreams or in reality attracts us like a view from the window. Life is “there”, beyond the window. Spring shines through the gap of the gate. The houses in the wood plunge into shadows and the trees are lit by the setting Sun. His own things and bunches of wild flowers picked up by someone else are given into man’s possession. The closer the object of representation, the shorter the distance from it, the more “objective” it becomes. But if the object is far away, as a landscape seen through a window or a gap of the gate, it becomes more “life-like”. In the former case the air has been pumped out and in the latter – it is in abundance.

Nature has its own philosophy, but it is the master who gives it to things and people. Things represented by the artist are “monological”. They make gestures and pose before the artist: the director stands behind their deliberate “acting”. Driven by the desire to escape from worldly vain, people freeze like objects. They stop, absorbed in their thoughts, and, perhaps will stay still for long. It is quiet here. Yet the echo of the Renaissance reminiscences can clearly be heard. It is there not because the artist stylises his manner after the Renaissance, but because he is looking for the absolute formula of harmony between nature and the ideal in the old sense of these terms. The historical precedent repeats itself, as if by its own will. The style buried in the depths of art history once again becomes relevant.

It may seem that postmodernism reigns here. But there is only one reason for our interest in the phenomenon. Postmodernism was never forced on anyone from outside. As a form of artistic consciousness, prepared to listen to the echo of past epochs and cite fragments of the previously unexpressed, postmodernism itself emerged through the cracks of fragmented culture of the late twentieth century. Every artist moved towards the new aesthetic strategies unsuspecting that he or she were being drawn by history into the circle of postmodernist sensations. Artists need not know what label the time they live in will receive.

Unlike many postmodernists, Khachatrian developed within the tradition, rather than near it. He was never much into mere citations or stylisation. But only an artist with a gift of following nature and history without either arguing or agreeing with them, could develop inside the tradition. The artist had to find the formulas, which if only in part contained both history and nature, just like a magical crystal collects all rays of the spectrum in order to give life to a new light.

However, it seems that, having reached the absolute by finding formula II, Khachatrian radically changed the direction of his research. His restless spirit made him re-address the experiments of the 1960s. He repeats a series of them, although, of course, not exactly. To see the difference we can compare The Three Graces (1990) with their predecessors of 1969. The freedom of form stands against the earlier severity; the contour is less defined or clear…

The search for the new has begun.

It was the beginning of the London period (1989-1993) that set up the foundation of the future discoveries.

Here, in London, in one of the capitals of Surrealism, accidentally or not, the visions of “hollow” biological form-masses posed against the thickened mist came back to life. However, the artist took little notice of contemporary English art despite the presence of individual, often indirect, references to Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Francis Bacon in some of his new works.

It would be good to understand this peculiar phenomenon: the luminous mist. The dark rays like the beams of mysterious energy are capable of giving life. Of course, the dark is the antipode of light, but here light does not stand opposite to dark: they are the substances of the same matter. The master’s feelings had already explored the element of light in his drawings of models, landscapes and still lives. Moving a step further in his study of reality Khachatrian discovers its nature and, in order to pass it on to the viewer, he starts making relieves. The “pressed in” relieves on white paper are particularly impressive. The very substance of light is captured in a physical form. It glares through and cries for the images of purity: like snow in the mountains or angels’ robes.

And light, and dark…

The artist’s understanding of the life of forms leads him to develop a technique of three-dimensional, multi-layered relief. The edges of the relief cast shadows. Sometimes striving to capture the transience of an impression, the artist draws them directly onto the surface of the relief. In their turn they will become the outlines of forms yet to follow. And so it goes on…

In 1990 in a series of his sepia on levkas drawings Khachatrian presented the “galanty show” – the “shadows theatre”. The very name must recall the Chinese performances with actors hiding behind the screen. However we are talking about the “shadows of the shadows” in the Platonic sense of the term, that is, about “images of other images”. Forms have their own memories and by analysing them, the artist moves towards the proto-types which have an archetypal meaning.

He does not believe in accidents.

Never.

Only an idle one would deprive oneself of the pleasure of noting the difference between Khachatrian’s former goldsmith’s precision and the style he developed in the 1990s. It seems that the artist is engaged in polemics with himself. To the accurate imitations of the disguises of reality he juxtaposes sketches of forms coming from another world. Hence, he does it differently. But it is not an accident. There are no accidents. That is why everything he shows to us with such convincing corporeality is literally captivating. Moreover, the emerging figures begin to have their own relationships with the surrounding space.

It becomes clear that this is the only way to represent them. Clarity is alien to them, because they are mobile. The viewer must join the game of still unfamiliar forms of energy’s being and learn the language of matter in order to speak of its mysteries.

Remembering the graphic signs of Formulas no. 1 and no. 2 (the degrees of conventionality of image-sign may well be different), not cancelling them but just burying them in the depths of his consciousness, Khachatrian gives them a new life [OR (esli ne im, a kak v originale) "creates a new, transforming initiative"] The viewer was already facing the blank wall of the niche (a 1981 drawing). Now it has been broken into…

THE END OF PARALLELISM. INVASION OF THE WORLD. THE UNIVERSAL FORMULA.

…this is how the master leaves the “parallel reality” of the art world and does not just take the real world “into himself” and his consciousness, but rather invades the world with his art. This is how he moves towards the art of objets – the art of representing three-dimensional objects. Hence – there are groups of spatial compositions.

Simultaneously, Khachatrian works in mixed media on cardboard creating the peculiar diagrams of movements of fantasy figures. They abandon their places leaving behind the brightened outlines – the traces of their being there. Finally there emerge the mutants – the loving and long-suffering creatures. They are related to the human race by their longing for love and desire to multiply. Their passion is even “more real”: they do not play as actors on some imaginary stage. The drop-shape clots of biological matter can fill any contours: following the laws of live matter they can blend together and divide again. They are ruled by the master, yet we ascribe their activity to the doings of nature itself.

So, how does this happen?

The laws of artistic imagination will never be known. Indeed, what can the others say if the author himself describes his works only vaguely, often with gestures rather than words? He uses gestures, because what he sees happens in space. It is obvious that Khachatrian is interested in all possible transformations, which are basically, endless. Only Salvador Dali could foresee them (Mysterious Objects in a Landscape, 1931). Here we are facing the mysteries where temptations rule. They act mutely, because even if the sound did accompany them we would not be able to hear it.

Unlike the Surrealists the artist does not search for associations, appeal to allegories or metaphors. He represents a certain “givenness”: presenting the viewer with a fact created by his imagination. This fact does not require an explanation. There is nothing left here for the viewer to think over.

The shocking and exciting art.

It seems that these works are not the products of the human hand. They look as creations of nature itself made in an attempt to demonstrate yet another possibility of existence. The artist’s dream of creating a universe parallel to reality comes true. Both realities are elemental. It is clear that a moment will come when one of them will enter our world. Therefore, the combinations are endless: just like life itself.

Khachatrian does not indulge the viewer in colour sensations. His objects are almost monochrome. The colourfulness of the world is still dozing, implied, but it does not show itself. Only red, disturbing ripples sometimes lit the background – the realm which is no less live than the figures which emerge on it, - feed for impulses and then absorb it. A moment will come when they will leave the realm, this time “physically” as self-sufficient three-dimensional bodies. Now our world will be their background and their environment, and it is from our world that that will feed for energy necessary for their growth.

It is clear that the artist passes the energy to them.

There he sees the guarantee of the matter’s movement and of the transformations of its forms. Previously he studied only forms seeing life through them. Now he is beginning to study life seeing that forms are secondary: they are contained in life; they leave it and disappear. The artist wants to discover a principle that would explain the diversity of forms. Thus some scientists study leaves one by one, others observe the entire tree, and yet others see an ordinary tree as the Tree of Life, whose roots and branches embrace the entire world. Each of these scientists is right in his own way. The artist wants to be allied with these scientists. Leonardo da Vinci’s genius testifies that this is possible. It was possible before, and it is possible now.

The longer Khachatrian observes the mutations of forms, the more he is imbued with the idea of Eternity, which both gives birth to and inhabits them. Singularity reveals itself in multiplicity, in the endless combinations of simple, easily recognisable objects, which joined in twos or threes create the unusual. The master observes the process of changing and, thus, approaches the question of time: from the stillness of the instant to the perception of the fourth dimension.

The crack-like ruptures leading to the world of the new dimension appear in the thickening realm of misty darkness. The dark silhouettes of relieved forms show off on the grey, blue and brown backgrounds. The forms are turning their many facets towards us and look differently from different angles. This is how we know that they are moving.

The “negative” and “positive” forms emerge like complex constructions in the spatial environment. They correspond while making each other seen and legible.

The viewer begins to understand that Khachatrian who had already used the “multi-step” relieves and positioned figure silhouettes in space before, in his search for the ultimate foundation of all origins, can and must move to the “models” of proto-forms. Indeed, the artist makes the multi-dimensional objects, which need to be walked around if one is to see the play of shapes which is only visible from different angles. Some of the shapes begin to rotate. This is an expression of the particular sense of time necessary for the existence of form in space. Thus, spinning asteroids travelling around the galaxies of the Universal Ocean have their own centres and rotation axes. Rudolph Khachatrian’s multi-dimensional objects metaphorically remind us of those celestial travellers. Rock-like and beautiful, cold like ice but preserving their flames deep in their crystals.

And they bear life.

So, the invasion begins…

Today, when all artistic conceptions are cracking apart and burn in the universal fire of aesthetic excesses, the position of the master striving to create an integral and systematic worldview looks extremely attractive.

Rudolph Khachatrian has found a formula of reality by discovering its essence behind the guises of alternating “realities”.

Artists-philosophers do that.

And, as we know, there are few of them in this world…
