The work of Rudolf Khachatryan is one of the notable manifestations of multinational Soviet art. Tradition and modernity have fused in this artist's works in the most original and convincing way. His love of Renaissance drawing, of Armenian architecture and fresco, combines entirely naturally with an interest in contemporary principles of drawing.
By the simplest, classical means he achieves a remarkable sharpness and expressiveness in his portraits. Great interest is also aroused by the new graphic technique he himself discovered — drawing on levkas (a primed panel). It has, as it were, allowed Khachatryan to unite the austere expressiveness and terseness of classical drawing with the possibilities of painting.
The artist creates images of our contemporaries, people as a rule of high intellect and uncommon culture.
His work is presented in the album "Rudolf Khachatryan. Drawing", published by Izobrazitelnoye Iskusstvo.
