Artist and Model
Notes from Rudolf Khachatryan's Exhibition
The external events in the biography of a contemporary artist belonging to the so-called "middle generation" usually offer little possibility for explaining the work of a given master. They do not provide the keys to understanding his choice of theme and manner, or his path. The explanation lies elsewhere - in the particular features of the artist's inner growth, in his deeply personal experience of communication with people. Dramatic turning points, reflections, storms, and that which, to use an old-fashioned expression, "brings peace to the heart" - all this can be found in the works of his hands. One can be enriched by what one sees only on one condition: by looking attentively and listening closely to the world of the artist's subtle experiences and observations. Then the most valuable thing will be revealed to us: the world order he has discovered and suffered into being, his assessment of people and phenomena. A new version of the understanding of beauty and of the tasks of art in the modern world will be disclosed.
What has been said applies to a considerable degree to the work of Rudolf Khachatryan, Honored Artist of the Armenian SSR. The features of his mature artistic image today can already be discerned in the works of his youth - beautiful works, incidentally - where precise academic study turns into a peculiar beauty of details lovingly and analytically worked through to the end. Perhaps now it can be said that the artist's early drawings already contained, or at least suggested, his present manner. Yet his mature works would never have held our interest or acquired depth and substance had there not lain, between the student sheets and the works of the last ten years, a period of other searches and other kinds of artistic passion. A thirst for new artistic form, an intense search for a visual language capable of expressing our time, compelled the artist for a decade and a half, up to the 1970s, to work in many different ways. Temperamentally, with fierce devotion, he gave himself in succession to plastic manners diametrically opposed in character. Yet viewers nevertheless understood that behind all these works one and the same face was hidden, that there was in them a special mark, and that with the years it would find the language for its full expression. The viewers awaited a decisive choice, after which the path of deepening, the path toward perfection, was to begin. And Rudolf Khachatryan made his choice. From the beginning of the 1970s he worked exclusively in graphic art, chiefly in the field of portraiture, and the pencil portrait became the dominant form of his art. It is here, in fact, that this interesting master begins; it is here that he speaks his independent word.
A profound emotional attachment to people becomes a kind of justification and meaning of his art. The artist gives himself to a single aim: he erects a distinctive monument to the people around him. Rudolf Khachatryan's subjects are forever fixed, "imprinted" in his drawings; we become party to his reflections, and the experience of his heart becomes our own experience. Success in solving the task the artist has set himself - to show people as they are, while at the same time sharing his thoughts about their human qualities - was possible only through the proper correlation of all the elements involved. The "ideal" tasks had to be embodied in a definite sum of visual means.
As they are, but in the light of his love for them - this is how Rudolf Khachatryan seeks to show his subjects. The artist's love for the model seems to materialize, truly "illuminating" the portraits by its presence. The surface of the sheet, on which the airy-light and at the same time analytical likeness of his subjects emerges, is permeated throughout with light. That is why there are no details of the real surroundings: people arise from this light-bearing environment. The artistry of the stroke, the barely perceptible gradations of pressure in the pencil, seem to draw the human being out of a stream of light for our contemplation. The artist makes masterful use of the infinite possibilities concealed in line, stroke, and the space of the blank sheet. In his works, white is never perceived as paper or as background: it is always the embodiment of airy space. With such an understanding, the practical inexhaustibility of the sparse means of drawing becomes apparent. A white sheet and a pencil lead in the hands of a master can convey the most complex feelings and the richest emotions.
Looking through Rudolf Khachatryan's pencil portraits in chronological order, one can see the development of this artistic system. The artist gradually moved toward liberation from details, toward a strict limitation of means, toward reducing the image only to what is truly important. It was precisely through asceticism, through a resolute rejection of everything insignificant, that he arrived at the special luminosity of his works and their spiritual substance.
In Rudolf Khachatryan's pencil portraits, one quality immediately strikes the eye, a quality not often encountered today: they enter, fundamentally and with full awareness - as one says, "with an open visor" - into dialogue with the examples of classical art, taking their place in the same line as pencil portraits of the past. Inevitably the question arises: for what purpose does the artist remind us of his predecessors? To prove that in the third quarter of the twentieth century it is possible to work at the level of the classical masters? Yes, the artist did set himself such a task. He wanted to show that virtuoso mastery, precision, and the poetic melting of the stroke are attainable when there is talent, training, and an eye.
But the aim was broader. The author sought to prove not only that he, as an artist, could belong to that high rank, but also that his contemporaries, people of our own day, could be depicted as heroes of classical art. Precisely and openly - often simply naked - in all the details of an external appearance understood as the "mirror of the soul," the artist depicts his subjects in a light-bearing space.
One may say that Rudolf Khachatryan's art has many aspects, but its central purpose is to prove that human individuality constitutes the principal pathos and meaning of art; to prove that the value of the human being is the main subject of art, and that the methods of showing and poeticizing the image today are the same as they have always been. The chain of continuity is unbroken.
Another quality of Rudolf Khachatryan's works is connected with this circle of tasks: they are very beautiful. Their finish, transparent understatement, delicacy in the working of details, and smoothness of silhouette together create a special quality of preciousness, not so often found in contemporary art. Meanwhile, the present-day viewer has a great need for beauty, and the success of the artist's works lies to a considerable degree precisely in this. To make a work beautiful is part of the range of tasks the master has set himself; the content of his works is revealed to us also because they are beautiful. Rudolf Khachatryan's portraits are extraordinarily precise in their psychological characterization. It could not be otherwise: when one depicts a person with the utmost precision, giving his appearance the clarity of a cast medal, mistakes are inadmissible. Approximation is impossible with this method. Flattery is impossible as well: everything that exists in the character and appearance of a person is brought to the foreground under the draftsman's attentive gaze, and the viewer can perceive and discuss the concept of this particular personality, relying not only on the beauty of the portrait and the appearance of the model. Yet through everything beautiful and ugly, through the harmoniously pleasing and the sharply characteristic, there passes a single aspiration - and this is the author's voice - to endow his model with a special nobility, to grant the right to eternity by defining his or her unique virtues.
Behind almost all of Rudolf Khachatryan's portraits there exists a broad field of associations. In perceiving such works as Astghik, Hovhannes, and Portrait of the Son, Italian Renaissance portraits, the heroes of Venetian canvases and Florentine frescoes, easily come to mind. We understand that the 1973 portrait of his wife is remarkable not only in itself - through the nakedness of feeling and the tension of the inward-turned gaze - but also through the piercing note that sounds within it: Ophelia! And although it is not difficult to list the details by which the artist achieved this impression - the wreath, the small bunch of wildflowers, the movement of the hands - the impression itself cannot be explained within such an enumeration. The portrait possesses qualities that lie beyond the limits of the genre. It contains the magic of art. However ascetically strict the artist may be, however programmatically precise every centimeter of his sheets may be, neither the model herself nor a documentary photographic portrait of that model can replace the artist's work. Within Khachatryan's sober, objective manner there is a charge of lyricism, the artist's individual choice and assessment. The master does not impose himself on the viewer; above all, he wants to show his subjects. Yet we feel his presence in everything, first and foremost in his choice and evaluation.
None of Rudolf Khachatryan's subjects, not even the oldest among them, are shown as being "in the evening of life." He always depicts people with a sense of perspective, of the future. It is probably for this reason that his portraits of children and young people possess such charm: the models look at us with expectation and hope; there is in their appearance a special responsiveness. And we, the viewers, respond to them as to beloved literary characters; we begin to "invent" biographies for them, enter into a living dialogue with them, and want to meet them in real life. This is precisely the response the artist sought. Even illness (Pierrot), even slyness (Natasha Saiko), even fanaticism (the linguist Melkumyan), as revealed in the models, create for us the possibility of living communication. These are people; they are precious to us in every feature. They await from their future and from their interlocutors a response and understanding. They wait with hope - their thoughtful, intent gazes tell us this.
The space of Rudolf Khachatryan's exhibition halls, the space of any room in which his portraits are present, becomes saturated with a "psychic field." The people he has depicted hold us in a state of intense communication. Through them we come to know "the other"; we become party to the thoughts, longings, and cares of people both different from us and like us. And to teach the understanding of another life and another soul is one of the highest functions of art.
